Hitty Rose enjoys many winter sports, such as skating, snowshoeing and sledding. Her snowshoes are called 'bearpaws' because of their shape. Every winter Hitty Rose oils the leather parts and checks all the straps. Sometimes she uses the ski-poles to help keep her balance as she goes around the fields at her Grandparent's house.

Her red saucer sled is made of plastic, and she loves to slide down the hill behind her Grandma's house. Her mother used to slide down that hill when she was a little girl, but she had a sled with metal runners, called a Flexible Flier. Grandma says when she was a girl, her brothers had a toboggan that was six feet long. They would all pile onto the toboggan and slide down the hill at the schoolyard. Hitty Rose would love to try that sometime!

Skating is another pastime she enjoys. When the pond behind the house freezes over, Hitty Rose and her father shovel the snow off the ice. Her father likes to sit on an upturned bucket and ice-fish, while Hitty Rose practices skating backwards. She almost has it! Sometimes she goes to a local ice rink with her friends, where they giggle and fall allot. But it is still fun!
