North Country winters can get very cold--40 degrees below zero, while rare, is not unheard of in this climate. But not to worry--Hitty Rose has warm winter gear to get her through the coldest days. Her snowpants and coat are a quilted, down-filled fabric for warmth and durability.

Her scarf, mittens, and hat were knitted by her Grandma. The hat is knitted with double strands of wool, with a 'rabbit-fur' trim. It's extra-warm, because Grandma knows that most of a body's heat is lost through the head. The mittens are wool too, to wick away moisture from Hitty Rose's hands as she plays in the snow. The scarf is always wrapped snuggly around her neck, and in the coldest weather Grandma has told her to pull it up over her mouth and nose, and breath through the wool so the frigid air is warmed before it hits her lungs.

Her boots are sturdy and warm, and Hitty Rose especially likes the fact that the liners can be removed to dry by the wood stove after an afternoon's sledding.
